Tenses sangat penting untuk dipelajari dalam bahasa Inggris. Dalam bahasa Inggris, untuk mengungkapkan suatu peristiwa atau kejadian diperlukan konteks waktu, apakah hal tersebut terjadi di masa lalu, masa sekarang, atau masa depan. Tentunya, ini sangat berbeda dengan bahasa Indonesia, yang tidak menerapkan konsep waktu dalam pemakaiannya. Berikut akan dipaparkan pengertian, jenis, dan contoh tenses dalam bahasa Inggris.
Pengertian Tenses
Tenses adalah sebuah cabang dari tata bahasa (grammar) yang memberikan penekanan pada pemakaian kata kerja (verb) dan penggunaan waktu (time). Dengan demikian, dapat dikatakan bahwa tenses ini bertalian erat dengan bentuk kata kerja yang dipengaruhi oleh konsep kala. Sebagai contoh, ketika kita ingin mengatakan kejadian di masa lampau dengan waktu yang jelas, kita perlu menggunakan simple past tense dengan konstruksi S + V2, seperti pada:
He went to the police station yesterday night. |
Akan tetapi, jika waktunya tidak jelas atau tidak disebutkan, kita akan beralih ke present perfect tense, dengan struktur S + has, have + V3. Sehingga ujaran di atas menjadi:
He has gone to the police station. |
Di samping kedua kala ini, terdapat kala lain yang mempengaruhi bentuk verb, seperti present continuous tense, di mana tense ini digunakan ketika kita sedang membicarakan suatu kejadian yang sedang terjadi saat ini. Sehingga, apabila orang tersebut sedang melakukannya saat kita membicarakannya, maka kalimat di atas akan beralih mengikuti struktur S + am, is, are + V-ing.

Jenis dan Contoh Tenses
Adapun konsep tenses atau kala sendiri secara umum dikelompokkan ke dalam empat jenis, yakni present, past, future, past future. Dan setiap jenisnya mempunyai empat bentuk, sehingga secara keseluruhan terdapat 16 tenses. Berikut jenis dan contoh tenses dalam bahasa Inggris.
