Pengertian Simple Present Tense

Simple present tense adalah bentuk tense yang digunakan untuk menyatakan fakta, kebiasaan, atau kejadian yang terjadi pada saat ini (present). Sehingga kegiatan atau rutinitas kita sehari-hari dapat diungkapkan dengan tense ini. Demikian pula dengan keadaan atau kondisi kita, seperti:

My dad goes to work by bus every morning. They often come to the store. Linda is very descipline.

Rumus Simple Present Tense

Simple present tense memiliki dua rumus. Yang pertama disebut verbal dan dipakai ketika terdapat verb (kata kerja), sementara yang kedua disebut nominal dan digunakan tatkala tidak terdapat verb. Sebagai gantinya, be (am, is, are) perlu ditambahkan di rumus kedua ini.

A. Dengan verb (verbal)

Keterangan:

1. Pronoun “I” selalu ditulis dengan huruf kapital.
2. Dalam kalimat positif, ketika subjek berupa she/he/it, verb perlu ditambah –s/es.
3. Verb dengan akhiran ch, sh, s, x, z, o + ES
   

   watch = watches wash = washes miss = misses

   fix = fixes buzz = buzzes go = goes

4. Verb dengan akhiran selain itu + S
   

   take = takes sit = sits play = plays

   read = reads call = calls

5. Dalam kalimat negatif dan interogatif, semua verb kembali ke V1.
6. Do + not = don’t
7. Does + not = doesn’t

Secara garis besar, fungsi simple present tense dalam bahasa Inggris adalah sebagai:

1. Untuk menyatakan kebiasaan

   every always usually regularly normally generally typically often

   frequently sometimes occasionally seldom rarely hardly ever

   barely ever never once a week twice a day three times a year

   Contoh:

   He always gets up at four. (Dia selalu bangun jam 4.)

2. Untuk menyatakan kondisi atau keadaan (sekarang)

   forget believe

   Contoh:
   

   I still remember the day. (Aku masih ingat hari itu.)

3. Untuk menyatakan kebenaran umum

   Contoh:

   The earth is round. (Bumi itu berbentuk bulat.)
