Pengertian, Rumus, Fungsi, dan Contoh Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Past perfect continuous tense, atau dikenal juga sebagai past perfect progressive tense, adalah salah satu dari tenses dalam bahasa Inggris yang bisa dikatakan jarang digunakan. Hal ini karena tense ini merujuk pada masa lampau dan mengungkapkan segala kejadian yang telah dimulai dan sedang berlangsung saat itu. Berikut akan dipaparkan pengertian, rumus, fungsi, dan contoh past perfect continuous tense.

Pengertian Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Past perfect continuous tense adalah bentuk tense yang digunakan untuk menyatakan kejadian yang telah dilakukan dari dulu sampai saat itu (past perfect continuous). Sehingga apapun yang telah kita lakukan dan masih berlanjut sampai saat itu dapat diungkapkan dengan tense ini (biasanya diperlukan adanya durasi waktu kejadian). Demikian pula dengan keadaan atau kondisi kita, seperti:

When the kids came, their mom had been waiting for three hours.
He had been standing in front of the door for thirthy minutes before it was opened.
By the time the teacher came, the students had been reading a half part of the text.

Rumus Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Past perfect continuous tense memiliki dua rumus. Yang pertama disebut verbal dan dipakai ketika terdapat verb (kata kerja), sementara yang kedua disebut nominal dan digunakan tatkala tidak terdapat verb. Sebagai gantinya, be (been) perlu ditambahkan di rumus kedua ini.

Fungsi dan Contoh Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Secara garis besar, fungsi past perfect continuous tense dalam bahasa Inggris adalah sebagai:

  1. Untuk menyatakan kejadian yang telah terjadi dan sedang berlangsung di masa lampau sampai titik waktu tertentu

    Contoh:

    I had been swimming for half an hour when they started swimming.
    (Aku sudah berenang selama setengah jam ketika mereka mulai berenang.)
  2. Untuk menyatakan CONDITIONAL SENTENCE Type III

    Contoh :

    If it had been raining, I would have stayed in the office until midnight.
    (Jika masih hujan, aku akan menginap di kantor sampai tengah malam.)
  3. Untuk menyatakan INDIRECT SPEECH dari present perfect continuous tense dan past continuous tense

    Contoh:

    Jane :
    (direct)
    Tim :
    (indirect)
    I have been gardening all afternoon.
    (Aku telah berkebun sepanjang sore.)
    Jane said that she had been gardening all afternoon.
    (Jane bilang bahwa dia telah berkebun sepanjang sore.)
