ADJECTIVE CLAUSES

A. DEFINISI

Adjective clause adalah klausa yang difungsikan sebagai adjective dan digunakan untuk menjelaskan noun. Contoh:

She really likes the present given by her uncle. (adjective)
She really likes the present which was given by her uncle. (adjective clause)
Which was given by her uncle
menjelaskan noun present.

B. POLA

  • Subject

    Who/which/that + verb + (object) + (adverb)

    Who: person
    Which: non person
    That: person, non person

    Contoh:

    Jane recognized the man
    He was wearing the suit (subject, person = who/ that)
    Jane recognized the man who/ that was wearing the suit
    I am going to see the action film
    It features Keanu Reeves (subject, non person = which/ that)
    I am going to see an action film which/ that features Keanu Reeves
  •  Object

    Whom/which/that + subject + verb + (adverb)

    Whom: person
    Which: non person
    That: person, non person

    Contoh:

    Jane recognized the man
    I met him yesterday
    (object, person = whom/ that)
    Jane recognized the man whom/ that I met yesterday
    I am going to see the action film
    You recommend it
    (object, non person = which/ that)
    I am going to see the action film which/ that you have recommended
  • Adverb

    When/where/on, in, at which  + subject + verb + (object)

    When: time
    Where: place
    In, on, at which: time, place

    Contoh:

    I remember the day
    I took the test on the day (adverb, time = when/ in, on, at which)
    I remember the day when/ on which I took the test
    I remember the room
    I took the test in the room (adverb, place = where/ in, on, at which)
    I remember the room where/ in which I took the test
  • Possession

    Whose/ of which + noun + (subject) + verb

    Whose: person, non person
    Of which: non person

    Contoh:

    The woman works as a doctor
    Her daughter is very beautiful (possession, person = whose)
    The woman whose daughter is very beautiful works as a doctor
    The cat looks so cute
    The fur of it is very thick (possession, non person = whose, of which)
    The cat whose fur is very thick looks so cute
    The cat, the fur of which is very thick, looks so cute
  • Reason

    Why + subject + verb

    Why: reason

    Contoh:

    I don’t know the reason
    They didn’t submit the paper
    I don’t know the reason why they didn’t submit the paper
